Blood has several important roles in your body.
Your blood carries oxygen, CO2, nutrients, waste products, and hormones through the body. It also protects you from intruding microorganisms, such as viruses and bacteria. Finally, blood also plays a key role in regulating your body temperature.
Red blood cells: essential to survival
Patients who suffer from anaemia or severe haemorrhaging, for example due to accidents or surgeries, require red blood cells.
